The basics of the sport follow conventional competitions held about the time generally related to Robin Hood; namely, the firing of arrows towards stationary targets placed at various differences. In modern competition these distances range from 18 to 25 meters for indoor competition and 30 to 90 meters for outdoor competition. What size recurve bow should I buy?
I'm a 15 year old girl 5'3" approx. 100 lb and I want to get started with archery. I'm hoping to get lucky buying a bow online, because we don't have any archery stores around here. I measured my draw length and its about 23.6 in. What size recurve bow should I buy?
Also, any tips on where to find one online??
Thanks!
what type of archery will you be doing? Traditional or Olympic style? That will determine the size you need.
For comfort though at 23" draw you'd want a 64" bow. If you decide to buy take down, that's a 23" riser with short limbs.
When you're just starting out, get something light, another plus of buying a take down is you can then just upgrade the limbs to something heavier once you're both strong enough and have better form. Something in the 16-18 lbs range, you see I teach archery, when I see someone about your size at the range I usually give them about a 10-15lbs bow. Most are okay with that, some still struggle, very few need to move up right away. So statistically speaking you should be shooting in that poundage range, specially since you'd be unsupervised, but that is not realistic, unless you have money to burn.

The much less well-liked forms of competition are a variance on the forms of the above formats. 3D archery, as an example, is often a type of Field Archery similar to the Animal round but where the target is a life-sized 3D model of an animal. These is often placed at unmarked distances in an attempt to recreate hunting conditions for a competition format. A scoring circle of concentric rings establish the score each shot earns. More open region competitions consist of Clout Archery, where archers arc shots towards a flag within the ground, and score depending on their proximity to the flag. Lastly, there is Flight archery, where there's no fixed target plus the aim is to shoot for the furthest distance. To maintain a fair competition, competitors are divided into bow class and weight.
